The following photos were taken on a monthlong trip through Romania in June 2007.
Photo Gallery 22 - Sighet (4) ... and Ukraine!
I.
Orthodox mass in Sighet
II.
The Tisa River, viewed from the bridge that spans it, on the outskirts
of Sighet. Ukraine on the left, Romania on the right.
III.
Griselda in Ukraine ... sort of! We were allowed to exit through Romanian
immigration, cross the bridge across the Tisa, set foot on Ukrainian soil, and try
our luck at getting past the border post (in the rear of the photo). Unfortunately,
Griselda, as a Mexican, required a visa, and we had to return after a few minutes!
IV.
This photo and following: returning from "Ukraine," we stumbled across this
burial ground in Sighet for Soviet soldiers killed in Romania near the end of the
Second World War ... and apparently after it, since some of the graves dated from
1946 and 1947. The graves and monuments were overgrown and in some cases defaced
(as in the case below) or overturned.
