The following photos were taken on a monthlong trip through Romania in June 2007.

In the garden of the Casa Iurca de Calinesti. If you ever
visit Sighet, stay at this place (email: riurca@casaiurca.com). It's barely
more expensive than the other, far inferior options in town, and is
a friendly and delightfully-appointed place (see especially room 5,
which has a lovely balcony looking out on the courtyard -- ideal for
sipping some of the delicious dessert wines available in local shops).
On the other side of the wooden wall at the right of the photo is the
garden of the Elie Wiesel house (see previous gallery).

Romanian cuisine is on balance nothing to write home about,
but the fresh local produce is uniformly fabulous.
